Chapter 166 – Black Market Fourteenth Shopping (2)

“Here is the Chicago pizza that you ordered. Where shall I place it?”

Baltren raised his hand in response to Dalupin’s query.

“Here.”

A whole Chicago style pizza covered deep with yellow cheese and pepperoni slices was placed before Baltren. Upon seeing this, Franz swallowed his saliva as he said,

“Ooh, that looks delicious. Baltren, can I have a slice as well?”

“Of course. Here.”

Baltren picked up a slice of pizza. The cheese on the pizza stretched an incredible amount. Franz deliberately spoke in a loud voice as he saw this,

“Uwah…. That looks great!”

As he did so, he took a quick glance around. Ninety Nine Nights. It was the dinner time for Master Hunter Kei and Kei’s ‘Chosen Ones’. As always, a sumptuous feast was laid out on top of the table, but the atmosphere was different from usual.

The mood seemed to be more solemn than before. Even as they ate, the others did not say much. The only one who was excitedly talking was Franz. The reason for this atmosphere was because of Serin and Kei.

It seemed that something had happened during the raid as the two people did not say a single word. Furthermore, even if Franz did not know what happened, there was a chilly atmosphere that surrounded the two. Franz was the only person speaking at the table; Baltren and Nada did not speak up as they were mindful of Serin and Kei, and Mahadas was reserved from the beginning.

‘Did something happen?’

Franz stole glances at the two, but he was unable to obtain a single clue about what happened between them. Nevertheless, he tried to bring up feel-good topics to liven the atmosphere.

“Though this raid was incredibly difficult, it’s a relief that everyone finished safely. Since it seems that there’s not much left until the end, hang in there everyone. When the raids are over, we’ll be the world’s heroes after all.”

Baltren reacted to his words.

“Hero?”

“Of course. The Operator said it when the raid was over that there are… six thousand people remaining? That means that, excluding these six thousand, everyone else is trapped inside the purgatory. If some people are able to free them, then wouldn’t they definitely be treated as heroes?”

“Hrm…”

Baltren nodded his head as he chewed his pizza.

“Not just any heroes, either. We’ll definitely become heroes on a global scale. Global popularity is natural… and we’ll probably earn an incredible amount of money?”

“Money?”

This time, Nada showed some interest.

“Of course. Companies all over the world will be anxious for us to be in their commercials. Don’t you think so? For example, sports companies like Dike or Idaas… No, we’ll become VVVIP commercial models for all businesses.”

Nada placed her elbow on the table and supported her jaw with her hand as she said,

“Hrm… That sounds likely?”

“When the raids are finished, everyone will probably become incredibly busy since you’ll likely be invited to places all over the world. And you might also have to prepare an autobiography of your experiences since they’ll probably sell like hotcakes.”

Even Mahadas, who had silently listened up until then, said something.

“If it’s writing a book, then I’m a bit interested. Since in Buddhism, it is said that spreading Buddhist doctrines is one of the methods that accumulate the most virtue. I believe that a fairly decent book could be written if I combine the experiences I’ve obtained here with the teachings of Buddhism.”

As the conversation continued, the stiff atmosphere became slightly relaxed. Wealth and fame. These two topics are topics that everyone enjoys.

“If this happens, what do you guys want to do? I want to travel around the world. I want to see all of the attractions while eating great food, seeing great places and staying at great locations. Since we’ll be welcomed wherever we go… We’ll probably be received very warmly. Whether it’s hotels or restaurants… They might even want us to come.”

Baltren had more humble dreams in comparison.

“Travel? I don’t enjoy going to places. If I become that rich… I want to buy a building in Manhattan. A place where I can clearly see Central Park. There, I’ll drink some whiskey as I look down from the top floor. Though in the past I could only look from over the police car…”

Baltren grinned as if he was happy simply imagining it. Nada, as expected, seemed to have interest in real estate.

“I want to buy an old castle in France. After buying one, I could be like a queen every vacation… No, if it turns out like that then there wouldn’t be any need to work, right? Ah, right. When I quit, I want to slap my superior on my way out. And then chuck my exit compensation envelope in his face. I always wanted to do it.”

She slapped the air twice with empty as she spoke. Mahadas did not have any desire for physical possessions, but there was something he did want to do.

“There were plans for some fellow Buddhists in Canada to build a temple in Toronto, but it was delayed for a few years due to the lack of funds. If I were to obtain money, I would like to donate to the cause.”

“The country will probably do it for you even if you don’t give them money. That is, if Rev. Mahadas wanted it.”

“Would they?”

“Of course. You’re a hero that saved the Earth. Do you think they wouldn’t do at least that much?”

“Hrm…”

As they continued to converse, the atmosphere at the table began to grow lighter. However, despite this Serin and Kei remained silent. Even after the meal was finished and it was time for dessert, they still continued to hold their silence. It was obvious that something had happened to the two, or perhaps between the two.

“Then I’ll take your orders for dessert.”

When Dalupin brought a pen and paper, Serin rose up from her spot.

“I’m sorry but… The briefing will be tomorrow, right? I’ll get up first. Since today was too tiring…”

Now that they looked, she had only eaten half of the gooksoo* that she had ordered for dinner. The hunters were slightly taken aback, but no one stopped Serin who left saying that she was tired. As she had said, the raid was two days later, and today was a free day.

“Then, farewell. Have a good night.”

After bidding farewell, Serin turned her head to the Operator Cube and said,

“Operator, send me back to my dimension.”

With those words, she disappeared from the table at Ninety Nine Nights. At the same time, Franz glanced at Kei who was wordlessly staring at the table that she had disappeared from. Franz thought,

‘Something definitely happened between the two.’

*

“Everyone, you did well. Since the resting period is until tomorrow, get a good rest today.”

Sungjin said as he rose from his seat. The hunters returned to their respective dimensions one by one.

Left alone, Sungjin returned to his room and opened the door. The figure of Serin who did not say anything throughout dinner was stuck in his mind.

‘Can you stay for a bit?’

He wanted to keep her here and talk to her, but she claimed she was tired and left. Sungjin’s feelings were complicated. Of course, it was not as if he did not understand her feelings.

This was because Edward was someone who truly seemed to be a good person. However, instead, he was more dangerous because of this reason. Last time, the final ten were people who did not mesh well together, but everyone like and trusted Edward. However, at the final moment, he stabbed them in the back. His betrayal was so much more effective because of it.

‘Do I have to explain what had happened back then…’

Although it wasn’t something he wished to recall, he had no choice. This was the only method that he could use to persuade her. However, for some reason he felt sad.

Even if she did not understand immediately, he had hoped that she would help him. Sungjin sat on top of his bed inside his room. After having eaten dinner, there wasn’t anything to do in particular. He was not going to go shopping in the Black Market, nor was there a raid tomorrow. However, suddenly, Sungjin thought of what the Dragon Archae’ard’s had said.

‘Ah, right. Before when I read your memories, there was something that I was also curious about.’

Having thought about that time, Sungjin called out the Operator.

“Operator.”

[Please speak.]

“That… Eye mask that I obtained this raid. Was it Ever Dream? Take it out for me.”

At Sungjin’s request, the eye mask appeared from the cube. Sungjin held it up and examined it. The Dragon that had taken a peek at his past had said something strange as he handed the eye mask to Sungjin.

‘Why did Edward, at that time, shoot spells at his allies?’

The Dragon had also said,

‘There is a topic that I was thinking about recently… If you can know the past in its entirety, then could you not also predict the future in its entirety? Something like that. With that in mind… I’ll give you this.’

Sungjin held the item above his head as he once again pulled up the Operator’s explanation window. He then read the ability of the Active Skill ‘View of Fantasy’ again.

‘Shows what you want to see from inside the gaps between time that has flown past. Only activates when sleeping for longer than 7 hours.’

Sungjin asked the Operator,

“Operator, what time is it?”

[The time is 07:45:33 PM.]

Regardless of things, he had to go to Darker than Black at four thirty in the morning.

‘Since I have to get up at 4 AM in that case…’

In order to sleep for longer than 7 hours, he had to fall asleep by 9 PM at the latest. Since he could not fall asleep the moment he laid down, he had to attempt to fall asleep by 8:30. Sungjin said to the Operator,

“Operator. Set an alarm for 8… 8:20.”

[Understood.]

*

[It’s 8:20, Mister Hunter]

Sungjin glanced at the Operator Cube. He had a set an alarm in case he forgot, but instead he constantly thought about it and had become filled with tension. Sungjin held up the eye mask and laid down on the bed. Afterwards, he turned off the lamp next to the headboard.

The rooms of the inn ‘Ninety Nine Nights’ were optimal for sleep, even for people who were sensitive to light. After turning off the last lamp, only an inky darkness was left, though it did not compare to the darkness of Darker than Black. Sungjin put the eye mask on his face as he thought,

‘Even though it’s this dark, to wear an eye mask…’

Afterwards, he laid down on the bed. Though it appeared to be rather large, it weighed almost nothing.There was no sense of discomfort when lying down while wearing it like this.

‘Hrm… If I fall asleep like this… Is that it?’

He could not get a feel for how he was supposed to activate it. However, it was definitely identified as a ‘Passive Skill’, so there was likely nothing that he had to deliberately do. Still, since it said that it would ‘Show what you want to see from inside the gaps between time that has flown past,’ he should at least think about what he ‘wanted to see’.

Without much further thought, Sungjin thought about that incident. That time, when Edward had shot magic at his teammates.

‘However, even if it’s like this… The reason why he shot magic at us… Isn’t that impossible to find out?’

Sungjin had his doubts, but still decided to listen to the Dragon’s words. He attempted to fall asleep while thinking about that time. However, since he was forcefully attempting to fall asleep, sleep did not come easily.

A person ate and slept based on the cycle of his body. Regardless of what he desired, for several weeks, Sungjin had been living a life where he went to sleep at about 10 and woke up at 4. All of a sudden, he began to worry.

‘This… What do I do if I can’t fall asleep?’

Failing here would waste the whole day. Since he couldn’t just take a nap for seven hours. Sungjin asked the Operator while lying down with his eyes closed.

“Operator, what time is it?”

[The time is 8:31:21]

There was still a lot of time remaining. Sungjin attempted to fall asleep a bit more. However, sleep did not come.

“Operator, what time is it?”

[The time is 8:45:02]

There were 15 minutes left.

‘If it’s like this…’

Still, it was an item that he had obtained after going through many difficulties for it, so it was not as if he could simply not try it out. Sungjin decided to turn off the 4 am alarm so he could try sleeping for 5 more minutes.

He attempted to go to sleep one more time while thinking of that incident. However, for some reason sleep again did not come easily. Feeling helpless, Sungjin was about to get up and call the Operator, when at that moment, he could suddenly hear someone else’s voice.

“Hey Sungjin, come here for a bit.”

When Sungjin lifted his head and looked, Illich was gesturing towards him. The Illich that he had personally killed not long ago.

‘What’s happening?’

Even though Sungjin was thinking so, his body began to walk towards Illich. He soon realized that he had arrived inside a dream.

  1. I swear if Edward turn out to be a good guy and he helped to comeback to the past so he can clear the raid.
    I’ll drop this.
    Because it would be K who’ll apologize to serin if it turn out that way and I won’t like it.
    Thanks for the chapter.

        1. lol this comment

          Malicious = intending to harm
          In other words, just by killing them, he’s being malicious.

          Maybe the word you’re looking for is evil, but even then, that logic is absurd.

          Think how ridiculous this sounds: “I don’t have any evil intentions, so let me kill you.”

          1. It is not the logic that’s absurd/ridiculous but the situation itself.

            If Edward was already on his second attempt and was certain that the current team was not enough to make it to the end it makes perfect sense to get everyone killed so that one person of his choosing would also get the benefits of a new game+ on the next try.

            If he was aware of the short immunity from the sword and thought Sungjin was a good choice for it causing a wipe makes perfect sense.

        2. yeah she pissed me off to, he save her life and tell his reason to kill him, but now, she like a traitor that killed his own mother that give her life. his goodness not rewarded and only meet with cold heart and she not even apologies O.O

      1. oh you sound like 100% sure that Edward is good guy? Doubting my intelligence.. coz I’m not sure yet that’s why I still continue reading.
        If only my brain is as good as yours, I’ll also stop reading like this.
        Just a hint and you can already predict what will happen. lol

    1. The subtle hints that had been dropped does suggest that Edward might be a good guy. What peeves me is that serin decided to side with someone who she just met and accompanied is a single mission. Kei on the other hand has been her “ally” for so long. He’s opened up to her and has even helped her advance in terms of equipment and knowledge. Edward on the other hand helped their team clear the earlier mission. Let’s not forget though that Kei also helped in clearing a mission together with serin (albeit dominatingly), with the former saving her from getting raped as well.

      Kei shouldn’t have to apologize or take the f*cking initiative to reach out to serin when it was that c*nt who betrayed him. If Edward turns out to be good then that’s great! but that doesn’t justify what serin did and hopefully the author rectifies the situation appropriately. What Kei needs is a team who trusts each other completely. I’d rather have the loyal samurai dude from the earlier chapters than a dissident archer.

      1. Yeah that is what i think too. Serin probably just doesnt have the courage to reach out to kei and say she is sorry or something. I belive she regrets doing that and is afraid kei wont trusts her anymore

      2. Rather than being angry at Serin, I’m more upset at the author. Serin going full-on retard is pretty out-of-character for someone who never hesitated once in killing even suspected trolls before she met Edward. The author spent a few chapters showing how Serin had hardened only to throw it all out in that last arc.

        Serin’s current sulkiness is just a plot device for the author to overdramatize the situation and forcibly pave a way for Serin & Sungjin to reconcile and get hitched later on.

        As for Edward, it’s probably something just as dumb and contrived. It’s probably going to be Edward trying to send Sungjin back to the past because Edward either decided that the final team was too toxic to survive (thanks to the trolls on the team) or because he thought that the upcoming raids were too difficult. And instead of Edward sending himself back, he wanted to send Sungjin back because #ProtagonistReasons

        1. Personally, i think that Edward went to past several times and failed, so seeing Sungjin as best candidate, he chose him to ‘pick up the torch’

    1. It doesn’t even make sense for Edward to betray them to begin with. That was the final raid. If they lost, he’d die too. Even if he killed everyone in the raid, he wouldn’t benefit at all because he would just die at the end too.

    2. FU you hypocrite your the thick bastard here! its easy for you to said that because you’re not the one who get killed on that time and your just reading it if that situation happened to you scumbag let see if you could say the exact same words that you speaking right now.

      1. You are right.
        Fu*king hypocrites all around. Bla bla obviously Edward is a good guy blanks how can mc not see how good he is especially after he back stabbed him bla bla

    3. As external observers its obviously easier for us to notice that than it is for him. He is not “stupid” he is limited, as he should be.

      1. Mate, there were like 9000 hints that Edward didn’t randomly do what he did. We got wind of these hints through Sungjin, not the 3rd person narrator, so what we know, Sungjin knows. Sungjin is pretty stupid, regardless of what you say.

  2. Why is it so bad for Serin to protect Edward? If one trusted person went balistic on another, who would you side with? Ed didnt want to kill MC, so stalemate would be optimal.

    1. Obviously the last several chapters discussions sailed past your head, just refer back. The list of why serin has done bad is quite numerous and a pain to type every time someone asks.

    2. Good grief. So if you knew that someone was going to kill you, you’ll just let that person live because that person is nice and non-hostile in that one moment?

      Sungjin wasn’t trying to kill Edward because Edward was being hostile; he’s trying to clear up loose ends so that the final raid doesn’t get fucked up.

      1. Im not talking about MC killing Edward. Im talking about Serin’s perspective. She wants them to talk things out so nobody dies. Plus when someone does that out of nowhere, there is no time to think.

        1. She dumbly refused to shoot the arrow. She clearly allowed him escape freely not to talk.
          Even Edward that claimed to talk summoned a tiger to run, she’s dense if she thinks someone who’s a masterful troll hunter would want to talk to a target (like he ever did) and she’s a total idiot for picking the target side.

          1. You mean she refused to mindlessly follow someone’s order? If he runs away, he can talk another day, instead of, you know, get killed right now with no explination. Sure he summoned a tiger, but he was running away – he already saw how MC overwhelmed the tank, so the tiger was a distraction. From what she sees, he became a troll or something.

          2. Mindlessly follow what order?. He didn’t ask serin to kill him all he asked of them was once they found him contact him which she didn’t Fucking do in the first place. Lol. He had to come finding out himself. Ask yourself, the only reason you are defending ed here in the comment section is because you know ed killed kei due to some reason yet to be known and because you are reading a story and you can guess one or few things. Put yourself in kei Fucking shoes without knowing anything and ask yourself why you shouldn’t off serin head right now after this blatant betrayal. Are you Fucking retarded. This bastard killed me once in this world of fight and survival and this supposedly trusted team mate just acting naive putting her head down cutely so the bastard can survive and kill me another time???? What am I a reincarnator?? I defy death?? I’m strong enough to handle what’s is coming my strength is what makes me able to form this group, my strength is what has kept the members alive and kicking yet this girl is acting off feelings she just got in one day???.

            You are looking for explanation cause you are in a comment section, kei isn’t he’s in a world of kill or be killed and this girl fucked up.

          3. Woah, chill out bro. You have read far too many edgy revenge stories. Killing everything only works in those dumb stories where everyone around mc was evil all along!
            ~~~~ i feel stupid, i just started to reply to your previous comment…deleting this line :c why is reply button not letting me go beyond with you ;_;
            If Ed was evil, then he would be grinning like a maniac, when murdering everyone, yet he was smiling towards the MC. If that does not make it suspicious, i don’t even know what will.
          4. Lol. Reply isn’t working for me either, I’m replying to myself.
            And kei isn’t killing everything. He’s far from that. He’s removing a potential thorn (more than potential) from his side.
            A smile? Lol. If he had good intention a second of trying to say a few words would have been better instead of smiling.
            Kai isn’t evil, he isn’t killing everything. He mad a good team and what he’s trying to do is stop anything from going wrong (which killing ed is part of).
            I mean he interviews people lol how can you say he isn’t being reasonable? But ed killed him once while smiling. Lol. Nah. I’d kill him straight up.
          5. Serin saw Kei as a good guy, but in the round, he acted like Ed murdered his family.
            Serin heard that Ed was evil, but found him to be nice and to the end (even after Kei tried to murder him, he didn’t use other players to dogpile on him)
            He was dying, last moment speeches happen in cheesy action flicks.
            Serin does not understand why Ed must die.
            Just because he is reasonable when interviewing, does not mean that he is reasonable when confronting Ed. Seriously, stop thinking from Kei’s PoV, and think from Serin’s
          6. Serin is the same girl that almost got raped no? Serin is the same person forced to wear a mask in this world to hide her face no? Serin knows what world she’s in and knows how items works but yet when her mind reading failed she suddenly didn’t suspect a thing or two? If I am thinking from her pov I can accept everything right until the point where mind reading didn’t work as it should. This guy is experienced, Alarms should have gone off in her head.. I mean how can someone so strong in this world by this stage be so honest ? Lol. This is why I said if it was nada ed met things would not have gotten here.
        2. Well to some degree Edward DID kill Keis whole family. He said himself in a previous chapter that even if he didn’t like everyone in the party and they did have their differences, he still cared for most of them greatly especially Nada and Edward. Then Edward decides to stab them in the back and kill them all. The fact that you don’t think Kei is justified in going balistic the moment he sees Edward is the weird part.
          Serin KNOWS that Kei has been through all this before. She has been saved by Kei several times and been given information, safety and equipment she would otherwise never get. She’s been having dinners with him, met the other Chosen Ones, spoken to Kei on several occassions and KNEW that he wanted Edward dead. How about you either give Kei the benefit of the doubt and trust that Edward probably needs to die or ASK him before it’s ‘do or die’ why they need to kill Edward. If she truly had such issues with killing someone for Kei why not ask him “Hey Kei, why do you need to find that guy, what did he do?” the moment Kei said something about it?
          The reason why people are hating on Serin is because she betrayed Kei by not doing the ONE thing he asked of all of them. All for a pretty guy with the nice smile she has known for less then 24 hours. If Edward was ugly you can bet your ass she wouldn’t have defended him but no, Edward is handsome so of course she decided to act like a spoiled delusional little princess defending her knight in shining armor.
    3. I get that she wanted to protect him. I think peoples gripe is that she was so quick to do so. Like Kei has backed her for a long time and told her things about Edward, but it didn’t take much for her to support him instead. I think that’s people’s issue.
  3. Edward is a good guy or not, basically he still killed Everyone else in the last time just so that he could be the one to Turn Back in time and re-do the raids, and if it wasn’t for the MC abilities then he Could Have Succeed this. Just think of it like this, Edward Didn’t believe Anyone of them was able to clear the Raid, so rather than waiting for them to die, he just Straight Off Killed Them for his own gained, as in Faster to turn back to re-do the raid. Then there is another question about How did he find out about Turn Back in time to re-do the Raids? Then there is still the same question about Why did he Just Straight Off Killed Everyone in the last raid?Couldn’t the guy just wait for everyone else to die or something like that? Did he afraid that he might die before everyone else so he just Straight Up killing everyone? He’s already a Bad Guy the moments the guy Killed Off His Teammates, whatever reasons for his action. It could at least be justify like he At Least told someone in the raid about it, but he didn’t and he did that on his own. Betrayal is Never Good in Any Circumstances. If Edward was really a Good Guy somehow, then that’s bad writing from the Author part, unless something like other members of the Raid Already Knew about Edward gonna kill them(What The Heck???) and only Sungjin didn’t know about it to trigger re-do.
    Thanks for the chapter.
    1. MC talks throughout the novel about how previous top 10 players DID NOT play well together (like few wanted to be leaders and stuff) , Edward knew the black market so he might have known more about the restart – hell MC already knows that that raid they were doing was not even the last! Edward put his hopes into the future.
      1. How is the MC supposed to know about this greater intentions of Edward? All MC knows is I got betrayed by a smiling dude. I started from 0 all over, I’m stronger I’m making a better team, why not just kill the threat? Ed might be strong and useful but he isn’t so needed to keep someone untrustworthy and then again ed didn’t even keep his memories so there’s no point trying to interrogate him. And if left unchecked he’lljust do the same thing at the end so why not just kill him? Lol.
        Author knows ed is useless too to the point he’s using a dragon that I don’t think any other future raid boss can be as strong as to deliver goods to show why ed took action and there are just like 20 chaps left? I don’tthink ed is needed anymore tbh.
  4. I didn’t even know the end was so close so at this point it’s either each chapter is lengthened as Fuck or the author rushed this or this whole novel is a prologue.
    Either way it’s obv author wants us to see reason for ed actions.
    I really don’t like how the author is handling this serin and kei case it hasn’t fully unraveled but seeing kei trying to be calm and disturbing the team rhythm over serin stupidity is rubbish.
  5. Thanks for the chapter! I think the reason for the anomaly in which there are so many surviving hunters right now might have to do with Edward’s actions. Guessing he’s rewriting the past at the same time too.
    1. If he was rewriting the past he would have to have some outside influence. Something to make him act differently. He has no memory of the last time, so i’m not sure what that would be. Perhaps it is a butterfly effect from Kei and his efforts, but even with that the different number of survivors is thanks to him. I mean, think for a minute. It doesn’t take much for info to get out about a super powerful guy who transfers worlds to kill trolls. All you need is one person to live through the troll attack and that starts it. Beyond that, he’s helped save many people and strengthened others. His legend has grown enough to be openly talked about. Especially since several people have been bragging about him. Including at least one of his chosen. That reputation keeps more people from trolling.
  6. Are you fucking KIDDING me!? After ALL that buildup THIS is how you resolve it? No talking, no explinations, no rage, nothing! Instead they sit down and have DINNER?! It’s so far from realistic that I’m speechless at the moment.
    Why didn’t Serin immeadiatly try to explain her actions and ask Kei if Edward truly needed to die? I mean she should be freaking out over if Kei would strip her of her Chosen One title or just plainly kill her after all.
    Why didn’t Kei demand a god damn explination or apology from Serin? She fucked up his kill mission after all hes done for her and he decided to not even MENTION it the second he summons all of them.
    Honestly, the storys worst chapter by far. If I could smack the author I would.
    1. Just so you know, the author has informed me that he had been reading comments on the most recent few chapters and we even had discussion over few specific ones. Chances are, he saw this comment too.
  7. This is bs. He wants to kill ed without any question as soon as he sees him, because of what he did so that there wont be any chance of anyone backstabbing the last 10. But he does nothing to Sirin that dident want to follow a simple order when needed, which indicates that shes just as big of danger for the last 10 if she cant cooperate when needed. I hate how hypocritcale he is being, just because he like her as a woman.
